Soviet Foxtrot B-39

Soviet Foxtrot B 39 Soviet Foxtrot B 39

The B-39 submarine was a Soviet attack sub which was launched in 1967. The Foxtrot class of submarine is a diesel powered sub and was the largest non-nuclear submarine to ever be built. When the B-39 was decommissioned in 1994 it was purchased by Finland, then through a series of sales she finally made its way to San Diego in 2005 and is now one of the exhibit vessels at the Maritime Museum. This submarine has had a few nicknames such as the Black Widow and Cobra, but I don’t believe any of these names was ever official during its years in actual service. If you’re interested in seeing some of the interior of this fine submarine, see my previous post (San Diego Part 3).
