When I was last out and hanging around in Franklin Canyon with a buddy, we came across many, many turtles hanging around a small pond that was in the area. They were simply hanging out and enjoying some sun, most of them huddled together in pairs or more with the exception of a few loners hanging around away from the rest of the pack. But a little bit further away than even the loners was this little guy. Considering how the other turtles were either on or near the water, this guy was pretty way off from any shade and the pond. He actually looked stuck in this position because it looked like he had tried walking over a small little gap in this small mound of rock and dirt. And with his legs being so short, it didn’t seem like he was able to get out of this position. Me and my buddy examined his situation a little bit because we wanted to get him out of a tough spot, but we wanted to make sure he was actually stuck. The last thing we wanted to do was totally derail this little guy from his long and tough climb. Because if he wasn’t stuck, then it would be too bad for us to bring him back to square one. He he. So we took a look at him and tried getting a closer look. He seemed pretty intimidated and tried to scurry away, but sure enough he really was stuck. So when he couldn’t free himself and get away, he decided to just hide away and stay in his shell. I worked my way to get a look at him from the front hoping to get a shot of him, but he was really in his shell and hiding away from us. But after a minute he decided to take a small peek to see if we were gone. Luckily my camera was on and ready to go so I grabbed this shot before he escaped back in his shell.
After I grabbed this shot, my buddy and I decided it was best to help him get back to some shade. It was a pretty warm day and we didn’t want this poor guy to fry out after hours of being stuck. So my buddy picked this guy up gently and we brought him closer to the water under some shade thanks to a large tree. And as soon as he was set down, he took another quick peek, stuck his legs out and scurried right into the water. This was the fastest I had ever seen any turtle move in person. It was pretty impressive and I guess he was just really excited to finally be unstuck and back in the pond. I haven’t been back since but I certainly hope this guy doesn’t find himself stuck out there again. I’d hate to think that he gets stuck out there for days without anyone finding him.
