I’m not much of a roller coaster guy. At least not these days. Not because of any kind of motion sickness or anything like that. But I simply do not like lines. I have absolutely no desire to wait in line for 30 minutes to an hour for just a few seconds of gratification. But that doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy watching them zip by. So when I was last at Knott’s Berry Farm I enjoyed watching the coasters fly by above me. And with my camera in hand I decided to position myself here. I liked how a couple of the Peanuts gang were rowing by in their boat, all while the roller coasters were flying by every minute or so.
The Sony a6000 served me well for this one because of the fast shutter speed. It allowed me to freeze the coaster right where I wanted it in the frame. Roller coasters definitely have some interesting designs as well. And with clouds in the sky it helped give me some decent light and protection from the harsh sun. What’s also kind of neat about photographing roller coasters is that I can position myself anywhere without interruption. At an amusement park most folks are there to actually ride the rides. So with everyone in line or flying by I have my pick of positions to compose from.
Even though I don’t go on many rides these days I still enjoy going to amusement parks. It depends on the park of course but it’s fun to go with friends and just have a good time. I do get on some rides here and there but only if the line is super short. I really don’t like standing around and waiting. So without going on rides I have freedom to carry around a camera and look for some fun shots at whatever park I’m visiting. I may head back to another one this Summer just for fun. Hopefully on a cloudy day too so I can hang around taking some fun photographs like this one.
